The Trump administration announced sanctions against Turkey for refusing to release American pastor Andrew Brunson, who was arrested on charges of links to terrorism.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders announced that the sanctions target Turkish Justice Minister Abdulhamit Gül and Interior Minister Süleyman Soylu.

The sanctions were imposed under the so-called “Magnitsky Act,” adopted in 2012 against Russia and expanded to all countries worldwide in 2016. The act provides for personal sanctions against individuals responsible for violating human rights and the rule of law.

In practice, these sanctions include bans on entry into the United States and the seizure of assets belonging to those included on the sanctions list.
