US President Joe Biden has approved a provision according to which the social network TikTok must be sold or banned in the country.
Meanwhile, TikTok management expects to win a lawsuit to block the law. “Rest assured, we are not going anywhere. …. The facts and the Constitution are on our side, and we expect to win again,” said TikTok CEO Shaw Ji Chu.
Shaw Tzu Chu’s TikTok video message came minutes after Biden signed a bill that gives Chinese company ByteDance 270 days to sell Tiktok’s US assets.
The US Senate has passed a bill to ban TikTok. The owner was given a year to sell his app to ByteDance to an American company, otherwise the TikTok app will be completely banned from American app stores. This means the Apple App Store and Google Play Store will have to stop offering TikTok for download or face financial penalties.
The ban is the culmination of years of political battle over the platform, which has exploded in popularity since its introduction in 2017.
Back in 2020, Donald Trump tried to ban the platform in the United States, but his efforts did not bring results. He recently spoke out against the possibility of a ban and said Biden would be “responsible” for the measure.
