Two spectators who were injured during Donald Trump’s speech in Butler County, Pennsylvania, are in critical condition, Allegheny Hospital said in a statement.
Another participant in the rally died during the shooting; according to eyewitnesses, a bullet hit him in the head. The shooter was also killed.
A rifle was found at the scene of the shooting. According to law enforcement officials, the attacker was located outside the rally area – on a building a hundred meters away.
Donald Trump himself was slightly wounded in the ear and has reportedly already left the hospital.
Trump’s campaign said in a statement that he will attend the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee next week as planned.
Trump is “doing well” and is “grateful to law enforcement and first responders,” the campaign said.
American media distributed a photo of the alleged sniper
A group of witnesses told BBC News that the gunfire initially sounded like firecrackers. According to the New York Post, nine shots were fired from a sniper rifle.
“We could see smoke above the ground, but it kept coming, so we all fell to the ground,” one said.
Eyewitnesses described how everyone around them ducked down, but some ran towards the noise.
“It was so surreal. I’ve never heard anything like this in my life,” said one witness.
The shooter was believed to be on the roof of a building outside the Trump rally, CNN reported.
