According to London Stock Exchange operator LSEG and two traders, the tanker, managed by an Azerbaijani company, headed to China for the first time along this route, which is effectively monopolized by the ships of Russian shipping giant Sovcomflot.

One of the traders, citing ship documents, told Reuters that the Prisma tanker is managed by a private company, Vista Vvave Shipmanagement, registered in Azerbaijan.

Our editorial team has repeatedly written about the fact that Moscow is not only actively developing transportation along the Northern Sea Route (NSR), which runs from Murmansk east to the Bering Strait near the Alaska Peninsula, but also considers it a real alternative to the Suez Canal.

Recall that although the Northern Sea Route is significantly shorter than the route through Suez, it requires icebreaker escort for safe passage of ships along the Arctic coast of Russia.

Launched nearly 20 years ago, the Prisma is ICE 1C, allowing it to navigate the NSR with icebreaker support. The vessel loaded crude oil in the Russian Baltic port of Primorsk and is currently in the Kara Sea, according to shipping records.

The Prisma flies the flag of the Cook Islands and is owned by Evergreen Embrace Corp., a company registered in the Seychelles.

Reuters, which obtained this information from the website of Russia’s state nuclear corporation Rosatom, which approves applications for transit along the NSR, was unable to contact Vista Vvave Shipmanagement or Evergreen Embrace Corp.

It is noted that in 2024, during the navigation period from July to October, when the Arctic ice becomes less dense, six tankers used the Northern Sea Route, which delivered a total of 600 thousand tons of Russian oil to Chinese ports.

The first vessel, Olympiysky Prospect, is already approaching the Chinese port of Tianjin. Five more – NS Arctic, SCF Baltica, Moskovsky Prospect, Zaliv Ameriсa and Galaxy are heading to various ports in China. All of them are managed by the Sovcomflot group of companies, which also declined to respond to Reuters’ request.

Traders expect an increase in oil supplies via the NSR this year, but at the same time note that the cost of navigation along the Northern Sea Route remains high and exceeds the cost of transit through the Suez Canal. In their opinion, China is the only economically viable direction for deliveries via the NSR.

Additionally, it is reported that Vista Vvave Shipmanagement is registered in Sumgait, Azerbaijan, at Baku Street, Building 5, Entrance 15, Apartment 36. However, no information about the company’s activities is available in open sources. One maritime website claims that the company also manages the tanker Centurion, which in June 2024 delivered Russian oil to Asian markets.

One of the online resources dedicated to shipping indicates that this company also manages the Centurion tanker, owned by Radiant Rise Corp., registered in the Seychelles.

According to monitoring by the Institute of Black Sea Strategic Studies and the BlackSeaNews portal, in June 2024, the Centurion tanker delivered Russian oil from the Baltic Sea to Asian markets. This month alone, 94 tankers loaded with Russian oil left the ports of the Baltic Sea towards Southeast Asia.

Recall that under the economic sanctions imposed by the West on the Russian Federation, seaborne supplies of Russian oil are limited to a price ceiling of $60 per barrel. But offshore and little-known trading companies continue to violate sanctions by shipping millions of barrels of Russian oil daily to China and India.
