Over the past month, three tankers have been damaged in explosions in the Mediterranean, Reuters reports, citing three shipping and security sources.

According to the agency, all the explosions occurred separately from each other, their causes are unknown. Thus, at the end of January, the oil tanker Seacharm, managed by Thenamaris, was damaged near the Turkish port of Ceyhan. In February, the chemical tanker Grace Ferrum, sailing under the Liberian flag, was damaged off the coast of Libya, the newspaper writes.

The day before, the Fatto Quotidiano newspaper reported two explosions on the oil tanker Seajewel, moored in the port of the Italian city of Savona. According to the newspaper, the ship arrived from Algeria under the Maltese flag on February 14.

The tanker’s crew reported two loud explosions in the evening of the same day, they occurred during the unloading of oil. A hole was later found in the ship’s hull. As a result of the emergency, no one was hurt, and no oil leak was recorded. According to Fatto Quotidiano, the Savona prosecutor’s office is considering various versions of what happened, including a tanker breakdown, a collision, or an explosion of ammunition. The port authority said that “some anomalies” were noticed during the unloading of the oil, and technical checks are currently being carried out on the vessel.
