Azerbaijan–Turkey Relations

The relationship between Azerbaijan and Turkey has long been considered one of the most unique political alliances in the modern world. This partnership is not merely a diplomatic or traditional military alliance; it is a special union built on deep historical, cultural, and civilizational ties between the two nations. The phrase “One Nation, Two States” has long ceased to be a poetic metaphor and has become a real political foundation underpinning relations between Baku and Ankara. Any attempt to undermine this trust causes significant concern on both sides.

Recent Concerns

According to Qafqazinfo, signs of hostility toward Azerbaijan have been observed in the speeches of Berat Albayrak. These remarks were made in the context of discussions related to U.S. and Israeli military actions against Iran and Azerbaijan’s state policies.

At the same time, in recent months, Turkish media and social networks have seen an increase in false, manipulative, and openly slanderous content targeting Azerbaijan. These materials rely on distorted facts, outright fabrications, and politically motivated accusations, aiming to undermine Azerbaijan’s state policy and including direct insults against President Ilham Aliyev.

A particularly alarming aspect is that Berat Albayrak is the son-in-law of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and has served in ministerial roles within the government for many years. Reports indicate that he has consistently led campaigns of verbal abuse, insults, and humiliation against both the President of Azerbaijan and his family, as well as the current Azerbaijani government. These campaigns are not limited to social media but are amplified through his political and media networks.

Turkish Presidential Administration Response

The Communications Directorate of the Turkish Presidency has issued statements condemning biased campaigns targeting Azerbaijan in social networks and certain media outlets. The Directorate, via the Center for Combating Disinformation (DMM), emphasized that such campaigns contradict the spirit of relations between the two states. The public has been urged to remain vigilant against disinformation that could harm fraternal ties and to resist malicious propaganda.

Turkish Media Landscape and “Turkuvaz” Group

The Turkish media environment has shown an increasing number of narratives that portray Azerbaijan negatively. In this context, the Turkuvaz Media Group is particularly notable. One of Turkey’s largest media conglomerates, it controls numerous influential TV channels, newspapers, and online platforms. The repeated publication of content targeting Azerbaijan on these platforms raises serious questions.

Berat Albayrak and Media Influence

Berat Albayrak is not just a former minister; he is a political figure whose influence spans Turkey’s economic, energy, and information sectors. His brother, Serhat Albayrak, holds a leadership position within Turkuvaz. This media network has been linked to manipulative and negative narratives targeting Azerbaijan, affecting the country’s image and strategic partnership with Turkey.

Political and Economic Context

During Albayrak’s tenure, Turkey faced the “128 billion USD” currency reserves scandal, currency depreciation, market volatility, and a loss of public confidence in monetary policy. His name has frequently been associated with non-transparency, aggressive responses to journalists, and information manipulation. The combination of his political orbit and Turkuvaz media has contributed to the dissemination of content harmful to Azerbaijan.

Azerbaijani MP calls for action against Berat Albayrak

Musa Quliyev, an Azerbaijani MP, criticized Turkey’s Turkuvaz Media Group and its head Berat Albayrak, accusing the media group of spreading anti-Azerbaijan narratives.

Quliyev said such activities could harm the brotherly relations between Azerbaijan and Turkey and called on Turkish authorities to take measures against individuals and media platforms promoting anti-Azerbaijan rhetori

Despite these challenges, the Azerbaijan–Turkey alliance remains strong, grounded in shared history, culture, and strategic vision. However, information attacks, manipulative content, and biased media campaigns continue to be a source of serious concern. State institutions and media organizations must respond decisively to preserve the trust and cooperation that underpin this fraternal relationship, which is also crucial for regional strategic stability.
