Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders said the American people are witnessing a “very sad moment in American history.”

“Yesterday, we witnessed a very sad moment in American history. We saw the president of the United States team up with… Vladimir Putin to undermine Ukraine’s independence and its democracy. Let’s be honest: Trump is showing us that he sees (Putin)… as his friend, and our long-standing democratic allies in Europe as his enemies. He wants a world that is safe for authoritarian regimes and oligarchs, but extremely dangerous for democracies. You won’t be surprised when I tell you that Trump is lying, as he often does,” Sanders said, as quoted by Ukrayinska Pravda.

According to Sanders, Trump, in particular, lied about Ukraine starting a war: “Yesterday, Trump said that Ukraine started a war. That’s not true. Russia has invaded Ukraine twice, first in 2014 and again in 2022. Russia now occupies about 20% of Ukraine. More than a million people have been killed or wounded since Putin’s horrific invasion. Russia continues to pound Ukrainian cities with hundreds of missiles and drones every day. Putin’s forces are killing civilians and kidnapping thousands of Ukrainian children, taking them to so-called “reeducation” camps in Russia.

“Trump then called Ukrainian President Zelensky a ‘dictator.’ That’s also not true. Zelensky won 75% of the vote in a free election. And he actually has a higher approval rating than Trump,” Sanders said.

“Trump has claimed that our European allies have done little to support Ukraine in its fight against Putin’s invasion. He said the United States has done three times as much as Europe. That’s just another lie. In fact, Europe has given more aid to Ukraine than the United States,” the senator said.

Sanders believes that it is not just that Trump is lying again, because it is no longer news that he is lying. Now it is about where exactly the US president wants to take the country: “All of this is indicative of where he wants to take our country and, in fact, the world. Trump is cozy with Vladimir Putin…”

According to him, since Russia invaded Ukraine, “hundreds of thousands of Russians have fled Putin’s brutal regime,” but the Russian president has retained control of his country.

Sanders pointed out that Trump admires the Russian leader. “But that is not the view of the American people. We know, and we are proud, that the United States of America is the oldest democracy in the world. We know that many hundreds of thousands of brave Americans have fought and died over the years to defend democracy. We also know that our allies in the world are those countries that believe in democracy, not authoritarianism. At this critical moment in our history, I hope that every American, regardless of their political views, will say “yes” to democracy, “no” to oligarchy, and “no” to authoritarianism,” concluded Senator Sanders.
