German Foreign Minister and Green Party member Annalena Baerbock promised to “increase pressure” on the United States during a campaign event in Potsdam in connection with the resumption of official contacts between the United States and Russia on Ukraine.

“We must show the Americans that they have much to lose if they refuse to side with the liberal democracies of Europe. … A false peace, that is, a peace that is achieved through blackmail or capitulation, is only further preparation for even more war and violence. That is why I will support Ukraine as long as it needs it. No one can decide on war and peace at the expense of the Ukrainians or us Europeans – and this is Germany’s clear position,” Baerbock said.

Speaking about American-German relations, she added: “Nothing has been decided yet” and advised supporters “not to succumb to provocations.”

On February 23, early elections to the Bundestag will be held in Germany. At the election convention of the far-right Alternative for Germany party, US President Donald Trump’s ally Elon Musk spoke, calling for “fighting for Germany’s great future.” Later, during a speech at the Munich Security Conference, US Vice President J.D. Vance criticized the leadership of European countries, including Germany, accusing them of restricting freedom of speech, retreating from democratic principles, and encouraging uncontrolled migration.
