A decision on it should be made by the end of June, said the German Chancellor
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said that the European Union (EU) is already preparing the next package of sanctions against Russia, a decision on it should be made by the end of June.

“As for sanctions, the European Union is already preparing the next package. A decision on this issue should be made by the end of June,” Merz said at a joint press conference with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis in Berlin. The German Chancellor claimed that the sanctions will affect the energy sector, as well as the so-called shadow fleet.

“We are determined, including me personally, to implement this consistently and with the greatest possible cooperation within the European Union. We will not be able to do this alone. But we will, of course, try to convince those countries that are still hesitating that this is the right path,” the head of the German government concluded.

On Monday, the EU Permanent Representatives Committee met in Brussels. The agenda included agreeing on “restrictive measures against Russia for undermining the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine.” Last week, the European Commission presented the 17th package of sanctions to the community’s countries; it is seeking approval of this package at the meeting of EU foreign ministers on May 20. As Bloomberg reported earlier, the EC proposes to blacklist 60 individuals and organizations and 150 tankers transporting Russian oil, ignoring Western attempts to set price ceilings.
