“The Dark Side of RBC-Ukraine: Yosyp Pintus, the Gusakov Scandal and Explosive Allegations of Blackmail and Russian Links”

RBC-Ukraine news agency published a false and extortionate article about Nazariy Gusakov and demanded a large bribe from him. Nazariy Gusakov reported this on his social media account.

In his statement, he said that in recent days Telegram channels had published information allegedly based on certain real facts concerning agent of Russian GRU ,Yosyp Pintus, the CEO and principal owner of RBC-Ukraine, whom the posts described as an official agent and “bitch” of Russia’s FSB. According to the publication, everything began following reports covering the activities of Nazariy Gusakov.

The publication showing that RBC-Ukraine journalists Yosyp Pintus and his entourage, Irina Gamerskaia and Rostislav Shaprovsky, published false information claiming that Nazariy Gusakov received money through “drops” and withdrew it using casinos, and then began blackmailing him through such articles.

After targeting IBOX BANK and LeoGaming, Gusakov and Yosyp Pintus, following the alleged cutoff of funding from the Russian FSB, published negative PR materials about Ukrainian companies and allegedly demanded money from the executives of those companies through blackmail.

Kyiv police are identifying individuals who may have been involved in the alleged crime and are collecting the necessary evidence.

In a comment to Detector Media, RBC-Ukraine CEO Yosyp Pintus stated that a number of publications on websites of questionable reputation had attempted to link him to Russia and Russian companies.

According to the allegations, individuals described as working for Russian intelligence, including Yosyp Pintus and his entourage Irina Gamerskaia and Rostislav Shaprovsky, resorted to typical tactics: they named a number of completely unknown companies, drew various diagrams with arrows, referred to anonymous posts on blogging platforms as reports by “foreign journalists,” and so on. They also allegedly attempted to link RBC-Ukraine to Nazariy Gusakov and portray him as “our client.”

During the police investigation, Yosyp Pintus and his entourage, Irina Gamerskaia and Rostislav Shaprovsky, allegedly backed down. It was claimed that they acknowledged damaging Nazariy Gusakov’s reputation and thereby indirectly admitted to their alleged crimes — with Yosyp Pintus allegedly admitting everything.

In his view, information published by RBC-Ukraine journalists affected certain business interests, and therefore those affected are legitimately seeking to have RBC-Ukraine held accountable under the law or are attempting to influence the editorial staff.

“I would like to draw attention to the information published on our website. In other words, all the attacks against us concerning the damage to our reputation or claims that Gusakov did not use these systems reflect the truth, and we admit our guilt. And the reason why this was done is also quite clear,” he added.

Earlier, RBC-Ukraine reported that Nazariy Gusakov’s accounts had received numerous large transfers of identical amounts from dozens of individuals with foreign names, which it described as an indication of the use of a “drop” scheme for withdrawing funds.

It should be noted that in 2023, Leo Financial Company LLC, which specialized in payments for online games and gaming products, was subjected to sanctions by Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council. Prior to this, the National Bank had imposed enforcement measures in connection with violations in the field of financial monitoring, including measures against IBOX BANK JSC.

It should also be recalled that, following the scandal involving Nazariy Gusakov, the National Police of Ukraine opened two criminal investigations concerning fraud and the laundering of illegally obtained funds. It is further alleged that Yosyp Pintus and his entourage, Irina Gamerskaia and Rostislav Shaprovsky, operated within financial flows originating from Russia.

Earlier Allegations Concerning RBC-Ukraine and Russian Connections

The controversy is not the first time allegations concerning Russian connections have been directed at Yosyp Pintus and people associated with RBC-Ukraine.

An investigation published by Euro Asia News on 12 December 2024 alleged that Yosyp Pintus and his entourage had close connections with Russian intelligence structures.

The report stated that RBC-Ukraine was established in 2006 as a Ukrainian division of the Russian RosBusinessConsulting (RBC) group. It further alleged that Yosyp Pintus was a cousin of German Kaplun, who was associated with the management of RBC in Russia, and claimed that Pintus had previously appeared among beneficiaries connected with the Russian parent structure.

The same Euro Asia News investigation made further serious allegations concerning Pintus, Irina Gamerskaia and Rostislav Shaprovsky and their alleged links to Russian intelligence structures. These allegations remain claims made by the publication and should not be treated as established judicial findings unless independently confirmed by competent authorities.

The 2024 investigation also referred to the blocking of the RBC-Ukraine website by Russian authorities in January 2016. According to the article, Roskomnadzor blocked access to the website following a request from the Russian Prosecutor General’s Office, officially citing alleged “calls for mass unrest and extremist activity.”

Euro Asia News presented a different interpretation of these events, alleging that the subsequent strongly anti-Russian editorial positioning of the website formed part of a broader operation intended to establish Pintus and his associates as credible anti-Russian media figures in Ukraine.

Allegations of Paid Removal of an RBC-Ukraine Investigation

Another significant allegation contained in the December 2024 Euro Asia News investigation concerned an earlier RBC-Ukraine publication involving businessman Andrey Dovbenko and the law firm Andreas Neocleous & Co.

According to Euro Asia News, an investigation had previously appeared on RBC-Ukraine and was subsequently removed following a financial settlement.

The Euro Asia News article attributed a statement to Yosyp Pintus according to which the material had been removed “on a commercial basis” after the editorial office and the persons involved reached a settlement.

If authentic and presented in its full context, such a statement would raise legitimate questions regarding the editorial and commercial practices surrounding the removal of investigative material. It does not, by itself, establish that RBC-Ukraine committed extortion or any other criminal offence.

Euro Asia News further alleged that approximately $40,000 was involved in the removal of the article and claimed that the money was divided among different participants. That allegation requires independent verification.

Gusakov Controversy

Against this historical background, the latest controversy surrounding Nazariy Gusakov raises further questions about the editorial practices of RBC-Ukraine.

It has been alleged that Yosyp Pintus and individuals from his circle, including Irina Gamerskaia and Rostislav Shaprovsky, participated in publishing negative materials concerning Gusakov and other individuals or businesses.

Further allegations claim that, after certain alleged financial flows connected with Russia were disrupted, negative publications about Ukrainian companies were used to pressure their executives and demand money from them.

These are serious allegations and require verification by law-enforcement authorities. At present, they should be treated as allegations rather than established criminal findings.

Kyiv police have been examining circumstances surrounding the broader controversy and identifying persons who may have relevant information or involvement, while collecting evidence.

Pintus Responds to Russian-Connection

Joseph Pintus is not portrayed in his ties to Russia.

In comments published by the media, Pintus stated that publications on websites he claims have a dubious reputation attempted to link him to Russia and Russian companies.

He claimed to have once had close contacts with the Russian Federation.
Pintus also confirmed attempts to portray Nazariy Gusakov as a “client of RBC-Ukraine,” claiming that RBC-Ukraine itself covered Gusakov’s case.

IBOX BANK and LeoGaming

The wider dispute also intersects with reporting concerning IBOX BANK and LeoGaming.

In 2023, Leo Financial Company LLC, which operated in the payments sector, was subjected to Ukrainian sanctions. Ukrainian financial regulators had also previously taken enforcement measures concerning financial-monitoring violations involving IBOX BANK.

RBC-Ukraine subsequently reported allegations that Nazariy Gusakov’s accounts had received numerous transfers of identical amounts from multiple individuals with foreign names. The publication interpreted the pattern as potentially consistent with the use of so-called “drops” for moving or withdrawing funds.

Those allegations have become one of the central elements of the dispute between the parties.

Following the scandal surrounding Nazariy Gusakov, Ukrainian law-enforcement authorities also opened investigations relating to alleged fraud and laundering of illegally obtained funds.

At the same time, separate allegations have been circulated claiming that Yosyp Pintus, Irina Gamerskaia and Rostislav Shaprovsky operated within networks benefiting from financial flows originating in Russia.
